Rural Recycling / Sheltered Workshops

MMSWMD recognizes that recycling service gaps exist in the rural, sparsely populated areas of the District. Through its grant program, the District provides financial assistance giving strong preference to projects that, if successful, would initiate new or expand existing recycling programs in these underserved areas or create markets for recovered materials.  Grant cycles are available throughout the year to cities, counties, private for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Currently, recycling efforts in rural areas of the District are supported by not-for-profit “sheltered workshops” and other not-for-profit industries that promote employment opportunities for physically, mentally or emotionally challenged individuals.  These types of businesses provide a two-fold benefit to the local community: a recycling collection outlet; and employment opportunities.  These types of organizations currently operating within the District H region are listed below.

Audrain County (Mexico, MO): Handi-Shop, Inc.

Boone County (Columbia, MO): Alternative Ccmmunity Training (ACT)

Callaway County (Fulton, MO): Kingdom Projects, Inc.

Cooper County (Boonville, MO): Boonslick Industries, Inc.

Howard County (Fayette, MO): Endless Options, Inc.
