Electronics (E-waste)

The Mid Missouri Solid Waste Management District strongly encourages the reusing, refurbishing and recycling of electronics. Color computer monitors contain lead and should not be landfilled. Toxic materials are found in other electronic waste. MMSWMD held its first electronic waste collection in Jefferson City in May 2007, where 8.14 tons of electronics were collected for recycling and diverted from the landfill.

As part of the June 12, 2009 digital television changeover, thirteen residential electronic waste collection events were scheduled January through June 2009 within Region H resulting in 72.9 tons of electronics recycled.

Below is the schedule and location for electronic waste collections scheduled in Spring 2010.

MMSWMD has contracted with Mid-Missouri Recycling  for MMSWMD residential electronic waste collection events though June 30, 2010. A $5.00 fee is charged for each television, computer monitor, copy machine, and microwave collected.  There is no fee for other electronic items.  Computers from businesses are not accepted at these events.

Electronic items that are accepted at these collections include: desktop PC’s (CPU’s); monitors, keyboards, mice, cords & cables (power, USB, etc.); modems; laptop PCs; main frames; hard drives; CD ROM/Zip/Tape drives; handheld electronic organizers and games; copy machines; printers (laser, ink jet); televisions; VCRs/DVD players; video game players; joysticks and game controls; cameras (film and digital); camcorders; speakers; radios; stereos; portable CD players; typewriters; word processors; fax machines; adding machines; scanners; postage machines; calculators; telephones; cellular phones; answering machines; pagers; CBs and two-way radios; and microwaves.
