MMSWMD receives an allocation through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources from the Solid Waste Management Fund as prescribed by law (RSMo. 260.335). The fund is financed by a $2.11 per ton fee on garbage taken to solid waste facilities in the State of Missouri. MMSWMD is allocated money based on the amount collected at the three landfills in our district (City of Fulton, City of Columbia and Allied Waste Services, Inc.), and the population of the district. MMSWMD is allowed to use up to half of these funds for operations administration and programs. The money not used directly by MMSWMD for projects and administration must be allocated for projects that promote recycling and waste diversion and benefits cities and counties in Region H.
MMSWMD encourages development of local and regional waste reduction, reuse, and recycling programs by providing grants to the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in the counties of Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Osage. MMSWMD is seeking grant projects that will develop new or improved programs reducing the generation of solid waste, or will create new markets or improve markets for recovered materials, or will improve the handling of items banned from landfills by Missouri Law.
In FY 2011, there will be two grant processes for small projects (grant funding requests $5,000 or less) and one grant process for large projects (grant funding requests over $5,000.01 up to $100,000). Applicants should review the following information:
